In response to wmdcrain, who uses Mepis Linux...
I wasn't familiar with Mepis; I use Mint. I see Mepis is a variant of Debian, as is Mint.
The only choice I question is your use of Google's Chrome browser. I suspect it of dialing home, the avoidance of which is the reason for using Startpage.com.
I prefer Firefox, which has a "private browsing" feature; it will not save cookies or history. I also use the No-Scripts ad-on, which lets me have line-item control over which websites will be allowed to run scripts within the browser.
I specifically never allow google-analytics.com, which is Google's way of tracking you everywhere you go. It's amazing to see how many sites employ code from google-analytics.com.

Re: Linux and Google Chrome
I have used some version of Linux, probably since it was available for download, and almost exclusively, since I was hacked and attacked on windows 2000, Linux is actually just the kernel, the heart of the system, containing modules, activating most hardware resources, Linux is open source, Linux is almost impervious, to malware, no need for scan disk, the kernel, manages memory, true multi user capable and no need for defrag, no need for virus scan, etc. it is free for download and many distros can be run live! Mepis is probably the easiest distro to use, in that it gives you a complete user guide, from downloading, burning a disk http://www.mepis.org/discover-mepis http://www.mepiscommunity.org/user_manual11/index.html

Many countries are converting to Linux > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_adopters
there is some what of a learning curve in replacing M$ windows ..but one can first run a live linux distro in ram memory, then install as a dual boot to widows, then after learning to use it and familiarity, the option of getting rid of windows completely,

I use http://www.startpage.com especialy when using google chrome
https://www.startpage.com/eng/protect-privacy.html
excerpt: Startpage's position:
You have a right to privacy.
Your search data should never fall into the wrong hands.
The only real solution is quickly deleting your data or not storing them to begin with.
Since January 2009 we do not record our users' IP addresses anymore.
We are the first and only search engine to do so.
Our initiative is receiving an overwhelmingly positive response!

Re: Linux and Google Chrome
In following the link, I wasn't able to find any useful comments from Linux regarding Google+. Without having read his opinions, I nevertheless think that as a Finnish citizen he may be a bit naive as to the overall motives of NSA-owned/operated Google. I say this because I've read he uses a Google Nexus.
I use an Android phone, and thus use Google services too. I just try to be aware that in doing so I'm giving all my information to the government.

Re: Linux and Google Chrome
Sorry I'm such a dinosaur, but I'm trying to download Linux and all the links and sites I've been to lead to something, somewhere else and I'm STILL not able to download and install onto my laptop. Can anyone give me a no nonsense link to 'download' please? It doesn't matter if Mint or Puppy or whatever. Thanks.
